Richard L. Harwood was born on March 7, 1775 and married Sarah "Sally" Callahan (grandaughter of William Buckland, architect) in 1803. The couple had nine children.  William was the eldest boy born on 24 December 1809.  In 1834, William married Hester Ann Loockerman whose mother and father were residents of the old Hammond mansion now located at 19 Maryland Avenue.  William and Hester Ann had five children of their own--four girls and one boy.  Richard L. Harwood was born to the pair in 1846.  On June 12, 1863, seventeen-year-old Richard L. Harwood died fighting for the Confederacy during the Battle of Winchester. The red cloth sewn into the fly-leaf of the Bible was Richard's military sash, apparently recovered from his body shortly after his death.
