This patriotic bowl features a host of early American icons.  Large quantities of transfer-printed Anglo wares were made in England for export to the nascent United States.  Potters in Liverpool and Staffordshire decorated jugs, mugs, bowls, and plates with sailing ships and/or Revolutionary War heroes to appeal to growing class of American consumers.  The interior of this bowl shows "The Shipwright's Arms," an image that can also be recognized on contemporary jugs and tankards.    The outside of the bowl records likenesses of Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, and General Lafayette. The image of Lafayette appears to be a rendition of Ary Scheffer's rustic portrait of 1822 while the portrait of Franklin likely originates from C.N. Cochin's engraving of ca. 1780.  This rather crude rendition of Washington as "His Country's Father" is ubiquitous on transferware from 1800-1850.  An eagle graces the front of the bowl accompanied by the saying, "Republicans Are Not Always Ungrateful."  The bowl is probably a commemoration of General Lafayette's whirl-wind American tour of 1824.
