This well-preserved example of late 19th –early 20th century dress was given to the Hammond-Harwood House by the grandson of Hester Ann Harwood’s first cousin.  The dress is made up of a lace covered satin petticoat with attached train, a fitted lace covered blouse, and a similar lace shawl.  A cream colored satin bonnet accompanies the ensemble but is not on display here.  The dress was part of the 1924 estate of Hester Ann Harwood, the last surviving member of the Chase-Loockerman-Harwood lineage to live in the “Harwood House.”  Because Hester died without a known will, the Harwood family possessions once exalted by Hester Ann and her sister Lucy, were put up for auction.  In the spring of 1925, Mr. Alfred Bronaugh acquired the following from his cousin’s estate:

            Bronze Vases                $5.00
            Stiletto                                 .50
            Blue China                   $8.00

            One Pair Bracelets    $1.00
            Pins Red Stone           $1.00
            Earrings                        $5.00
            Amethyst Pin              $1.00
            Pair Earrings               $2.00
            Pair Earrings               $1.00
            Pin (Vine)                    $2.00
            Pair Earrings               $5.00
            Pearl Pin                      $5.00

            Earrings                              .25
            Wedding Ring             $1.00

Although the above dress is not included in the list of purchases, the donor reported that the dress was “from the home of Hester Ann Harwood.”  Indeed, based on the age and condition of the gown, the dress may have belonged to Hester Ann or her older sister Lucy.
