Frequently Asked Questions
Who is eligible?
Undergraduate or graduate students of any age, currently enrolled in a college/university, seeking professional experience that will inform academic studies and prepare them for a related career. High school students are not considered interns. Students seeking extremely short-term volunteer experiences, such as shadowing opportunities, are also not considered interns.
How are interns selected?
Selection is based on the student’s completed application and clear statement of career goals or interests. It is important that an intern’s skills and availability match with institutional needs and the Hammond-Harwood House schedule.
Are interns paid? Can I get academic credit?
Currently only 2 internships are paid; however, academic credit can be arranged through the student’s school. The Mrs. Charles Carroll Brice Internships pay a stipend of $2,500.00 annually, minus 7.65% for Social Security and Medicare.
( A total of $2,308.75 with the above subtracted)
How much time is required?
Internship opportunities range from one month to one semester, and the hours worked per week may vary from 4.5 to 40.0. The paid interns must work no less than 425 hours total. Internships may be specialized or broad-based and may be sponsored by an academic advisor.
What will be expected of me?
You will be treated like a member of the Hammond-Harwood House staff. As such, you will be held to similar standards of punctuality and professionalism. Aside from the basic job duties of your internship, you will be asked to give a formal presentation near the end of your experience. This will give the staff an appreciation of your hard work, and you will gain experience with public speaking. Individual supervisors may assign readings or other requirements, but this will be determined before you start your internship and will be included in your learning contract.
What is a Learning Contract?
It is important for each intern to have a formal agreement with the historical society. This form will clarify mutual expectations at the outset and will help ensure that both parties fulfill their responsibilities. The agreement will include the start and end dates, hours and days of work, specifics of intern’s responsibilities (such as participating in an exit interview and making a final presentation to staff), job description, and direct supervisor’s name. If the internship is for academic credit, the contract will include the signature of the academic advisor and an explanation of what additional requirements are part of the internship (such as final papers, journals, etc.). It is the intern’s responsibility to make sure the contract is signed and returned to the supervisor before their start date.
Do I need to have a specific academic major in order to get an internship?
In most cases, the answer is no. Individuals with many different backgrounds and interests have had successful, productive internships. It is important, however, for the student to be interested in pursuing a related career.
Are there application deadlines?
There are no application deadlines; however, opportunities are limited and are offered on a first-come first-serve basis.
With whom do I talk if I have more questions?
