Built
by William Buckland in 1774, the Hammond-Harwood House is now home to one of the
largest collections of furniture by John Shaw in the area. In total, the
museum maintains nineteen objects which are currently attributed to Shaw or his
shop. Fourteen of those objects are owned by the museum and five are on
temporary loan.
This small exhibition outlines what scholars now know about John Shaw as a man and about John Shaw as an artisan. Learn the biographical details of his life, take a look at primary source material reflecting Shaw's business and personal effects, and finally, examine our fine collection of John Shaw furniture in the museum's period rooms.
